Hungry for Success and Happiness?
Aretakis Dishes Up Solutions
in No More Ramen™: the 20-something’s Real World Survival Guide
(SCOTTSDALE, AZ — November 2, 2006) What do you do when you hear hundreds of cries for help from 20-somethings who are stepping from the classroom to the workplace or struggling to find their way early in their careers? If you are Nicholas Aretakis, you partner with young people and offer help in his new book, No More Ramen: the 20-something’s real world survival guide,™ in bookstores now.
“No More Ramen offers straight talk answers, hands-on tools and proven methods to help 20-somethings learn the ropes, get ahead and eat ramen noodles – the ever popular college survival food – because they like to not because they have to, “ Aretakis said.
Aretakis is a 40-something who has been a 20-something and remembers all too well how challenging and confusing finding your place in the real world can be. Growing up in suburban New York, he modeled the strong middle-class work ethic of his parents, taking on construction jobs and working off hours contributing to the family business to help support the family and to pay for college. Aretakis holds degrees in Mathematics and Electrical Engineering from Hobart College and Columbia University, respectively. When he got out of school he knew one thing for sure – he didn’t want to be mathematician or sit behind a computer as an engineer!
To answer his personal cry for help which involved working more directly with people and being what he calls an “impact player,” Aretakis early in his career took on a series of sales and marketing jobs in high technology companies including Microchip Technology, Inc., and SEEQ Technology, Inc. He moved on to senior executive positions at ESS Technology, Inc., and GlobeSpan, Inc. With much ambition, hard work, volunteering for challenging and demanding international assignments, demonstrated results and leadership qualities, he emerges as a young Silicon Valley millionaire.
Aretakis’ world took on a new focus when he was 26-years old.
“I received a wake up call on August 16, 1987 when I missed a connecting flight from Albany, New York, connecting with a flight that was heading to Phoenix, Arizona, via Detroit, Michigan. The flight crashed with only one survivor, a young girl who magically survived in her mother’s arms. I realized it was time to find balance in my life,” Aretakis said.
That revelation changed his life on and off the job. Today, Aretakis is happily married and a father of two young girls. He is an industry veteran in high technology, and chairman and founder of Puppy and Pet Products International, LLC. (www.ezleash.com), a company he started with his wife and a few friends as a hobby given his passion and love for dogs, especially his two feisty Jack Russell terriers. He also serves on the board of directors of QuickLogic Corporation. In between his busy schedule, he found time to write the book and to launch NoMoreRamenOnline.com, a highly interactive website community geared to young adults navigating the transition from academic life into the real world.
“I have been counseling 20-somethings for almost 15 years when I noticed a pattern and decided to write down my observations. I knew what worked for me. I knew the concerns of those I mentored through the years and our solutions. Last year, to be absolutely certain of relating to today’s 20-somethings, I put together a team who traveled across America talking to soon-to-be-graduates, graduate students and new hires. I consider all of these young people co-authors,” Aretakis noted.
“Their stories, their worries and their real life situations are the heart of No More Ramen™.”
“Many of my friends, their friends and young people I’ve know are fearful of the future, so much so that they get frozen in place and time – scared to make the next move. They are optimistic but don’t know where to start on an array of fundamental issues. I wrote No More Ramen to get 20-somethings in motion -- helping them address real world concerns like knowing themselves, setting goals, finding a job, becoming financially responsible, purchasing health insurance, buying a car, knowing how to handle yourself in a business meeting, interpersonal relationships within the workplace -- and a wealth of other real world solutions for achieving balance and ultimately accelerating their paths to happiness.
